Vote Yes to Ease Overcrowding
Dear Editor,
As Madisonians, it makes us proud when our city is favorably recognized for the intelligent, hard-working people we produce. People choose to live in Madison because of its schools-people that create and fill jobs that are beneficial to our economy. People moving to Madison cause growth. The Madison Department of Planning and Development has projected 13,000 new dwelling units will be constructed on Madison's far west side. Where are we going to educate the growth?
My children attend Chavez Elementary, the closest public elementary school to this projected growth. We are at 109% of capacity this year. Music is in the cafeteria and several students receive Art classes from a rolling cart. Some students are in rooms that do not have windows because they were not intended to be used as classrooms. Next year we need 47 more seats at Chavez.
Bussing the growth to under-capacity schools will cost us thousands more in transportation costs per year, increase traffic, harm the environment, and it will only be a temporary solution.
Voting YES for the school referendum on November 7 will build a new school on Madison's west side to meet the demands of our growing population. It will cost the average taxpayer $29.21 for the first six years, and less in years after.
Voting YES benefits us all. Overcrowded schools reduce our children's abilities to learn. This affects everyone. Everyone in Madison lives with the people our public schools produce. Voting YES makes Madison and its schools proud!
